WHAT IS THE NDIS?
The NDIS, or National Disability Insurance Scheme, is a game-changer for how people access disability services and support across Australia.
The NDIS is here to make sure everyone gets the help they need for a better, more independent life. It provides funding to eligible people with disabilities, and connects them to local services like therapies, community groups, sporting clubs, libraries, and schools.
The NDIS supports more than 500,000 Australians with disabilities, including around 80,000 kids with developmental delays, ensuring they get help early on for the best outcomes in life.
CHOICE & CONTROL WITHIN THE NDIS
The NDIS is designed to put you, the participant, at the centre of the decision-making process enabling you to have full choice and control over your supports.
It assists you to self-manage and coordinate, deciding who supports you, when they provide that support and how it’s delivered, so that you can achieve your NDIS goals. You can live your life the way you want to with maximum independence.
HOW DOES THE NDIS WORK?
The NDIS is like a lifelong insurance plan for support. It focuses on helping you early in life to make things better later on. The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) manages and puts this plan into action.
The NDIA checks if you qualify for NDIS support, looks at your request for help, and decides how much funding you'll get. Their decisions follow the rules in the NDIS Act 2013, which outlines what kinds of support and services the NDIS can help with. It's all about making sure you get the support you need for a better and more independent life.
HOW DO I APPLY?
Applying for the NDIS may seem overwhelming at first, follow the steps below to help guide you through the process.

Start your NDIS journey by checking if you are eligible on the NDIS website (click here).

If you are eligible, call the NDIS at 1800 800 110 and ask to make an Access Request. Or download the Access Request form online (click here).

During your chat with the NDIS, they'll ask some simple questions to learn more about you and your situation to gain an overview of how your disability affects your daily life.

You will need to provide evidence of your disability to support your request, this can take some time, but it is an important step in the approval process. To understand what's required click here.

Typically, your application is reviewed in 21 days or less, and you'll receive an 'access decision' letter. If you're approved, it's time for the next step.
