Does plan management take money from my support worker or therapy funding?

No. Plan management is funded from Improved Life Choices, a separate allocation within your Capacity Building budget. Your Core Supports (including support workers, community access, and transport) and your therapy funding are not affected.

What is Improved Life Choices in an NDIS plan?

Improved Life Choices is a sub category within the Capacity Building budget of an NDIS plan. It specifically funds plan management services, the financial administration of your plan by a registered plan manager.

How much does plan management cost?

Plan managers charge within the NDIA's published maximum prices for plan management, as set out in the NDIS Pricing Schedule. These fees are paid from your Improved Life Choices budget, not out of your own pocket.

Can I switch plan managers if I am not happy?

Yes. You can switch plan managers at any time, there is no mandatory lock in period, and it does not require a plan variation. You notify your current plan manager in writing and sign a service agreement with your new one. If your plan is in PACE, you may also need to endorse your new plan manager with the NDIA before they can start.

What if plan management is not in my current NDIS plan?

You can ask the NDIA to add it at any time as a plan variation, or raise it at your next scheduled reassessment. The NDIA needs to agree, and a variation takes up to 28 days to complete. Contact the NDIA on 1800 800 110 to discuss your options.

Do I need to pay my plan manager separately to what the NDIS funds?

No. For standard plan management services, your plan manager is paid entirely from your NDIS Improved Life Choices budget. You should never receive an out of pocket invoice for NDIS covered plan management services from a registered plan manager.

Is NDIS Plan Management Free? Explained

There is one question we get asked more than almost any other. “Is plan management actually free? Or is there a catch?” It is a fair question. When someone tells you that a service is free, the natural instinct is to wonder what you are missing. So, here is the honest answer.

The short answer is yes. NDIS plan management is genuinely free for participants.

The NDIS funds it separately, through a dedicated budget line called Improved Life Choices, added on top of your other supports. It never comes out of your Core Supports or therapy funding, and you never pay a cent out of pocket. But there are a few things worth understanding about how that works, and what to look for when choosing a plan manager.

How Is Plan Management Funded?

Every NDIS plan is built around three main budgets:

01 Core Supports
Your everyday living and community participation supports.

02 Capital Supports
Big-ticket items like assistive technology and home modifications.

03 Capacity Building
Things that help you build skills and independence over time.

Plan management sits inside the Capacity Building budget, under a specific sub category called Improved Life Choices. This is a dedicated bucket of funding separate from your Core Supports and separate from your therapy, support workers, and other services.

Improved Life Choices is allocated on top of your other support. Saying yes to plan management doesn't mean saying no to anything else in your plan.

So What Does Plan Management Funding Actually Cover?

The Improved Life Choices budget covers the fees your plan manager charges for their services. Those services include:

Receiving and checking invoices from your providers.
Processing and paying those invoices, usually within a few business days.
Tracking your budget across all categories, so you always know where your funding stands.
Providing you with regular statements and budget reports, helping you track over or under spending.
Monitoring NDIS compliance on every invoice.
Communicating with the NDIA on financial matters.
Helping you prepare for plan reviews with spending reports.

All of that the administration, compliance, budget tracking, and fast payments are what the Improved Life Choices funding pays for. You access every bit of it without it touching a dollar of your other support.

Does it cost participants anything out of pocket?

No.

There is no out of pocket cost for plan management when it is in your NDIS plan. Your plan manager is paid directly from your Improved Life Choices budget.

You never receive an invoice from your plan manager. You never need to pay them and claim a reimbursement. The NDIA pays them through the NDIS portal, it is all handled behind the scenes.

Think of it this way: your plan manager works for you, but they are paid by the NDIA. You get professional financial administration at no personal cost.

What are the NDIS price limits?

The NDIA sets price limits for plan management fees through the NDIS Pricing Schedule, and which replaced the previous Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits (PAPL) from 1 July 2026. The Pricing Schedule is updated annually from 1 July.

The plan management fee is set by the NDIA at a specific capped monthly rate. You can always check the current figure at the NDIS providers pricing and payments page.

What does that mean in practice? It means the NDIA funds plan management at a set rate. Your plan manager receives that rate. You receive the service, and nobody takes money from your other support to top it up.

Whichever path you take, the NDIA needs to agree to the change, and once they have the information they need, a variation takes up to 28 days to complete. Is there a difference between plan managers on cost?

A great question and one not enough people ask. All NDIS registered plan managers must charge within the NDIA's maximum prices. That means you should not be paying more with one plan manager than another. But here is what can vary:

Portal quality. Whether you get real time budget visibility or just a monthly statement.

Are There Any Hidden Costs to Watch Out For?

NDIS registered plan managers cannot charge participants above the NDIA maximum prices, or add fees outside of what is covered by the Improved Life Choices budget. However, there are a few things worth being aware of:

01 Out of Plan Charges
Some plan managers may charge for services that fall outside the NDIS, such as financial advice, tax returns, or personal budgeting services that are not covered by Improved Life Choices. These would not come from your NDIS plan, and it is worth asking upfront what is covered and what is not.

02 Unregistered Plan Managers
Only NDIS registered plan managers can have their fees processed through the NDIS portal. If someone offers you plan management services but is not registered with the NDIS Commission, they cannot be paid from your Improved Life Choices budget. Always verify registration at www.ndiscommission.gov.au

03 Lock in Clauses or Exit Fees
NDIS plan management has no mandatory lock in period. You have the right to switch plan managers at any time for any reason. If a plan manager attempts to charge an exit fee or enforce a lock in contract, that is a red flag. Report it to the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission.
