What Independence Means

WHAT DOES INDEPENDENT MEAN FOR A PLAN MANAGER?
An independent plan manager handles the financial side of your plan and nothing else, just like First2Care. There is no conflict-of-interest spanning from offering other support services like therapy, support work or support coordination. Some organisations offer plan management alongside other direct support. That arrangement is allowed presently but will be phased out with the incoming NDIS reforms. The reason for this change is that it creates a relationship that could cause a conflict in the services they recommend for you, preventing choice and control.
WHAT DOES INDEPENDENCE MEAN FOR MY CHOICE OF PROVIDERS?
It means the plan manager paying your invoices has no other service of its own to point you toward. Just like with First2Care, your other provider choices stay based on what suits you, your goals and your budget not on what your plan manager also happens to offer.
DOES A PLAN MANAGER CHOOSE MY PROVIDERS FOR ME?
No. Choosing your providers, including plan manager, is always your decision. A plan manager's role is to pay the invoices approve and keep records of how your funding is spent.
CAN I USE REGISTERED AND UNREGISTERED PROVIDERS?
Plan-managed funding generally gives you access to both registered and unregistered providers, because your plan managers pays them on your behalf rather than the NDIS paying them directly. Some supports must still be delivered by a registered provider. Your funding can only be spent on NDIS supports that are in line with your plan.

It can reduce some of them, but it doesn't remove the need to manage relationships fairly. A plan manager should be open about any relevant connections, and you're entitled to ask about them before you choose. Because First2Care doesn't deliver direct supports, the specific situation of recommending its own service and then processing that invoice doesn't arise.
What matters when you're comparing plan managers is transparency whether relevant connections are disclosed openly, not whether an organisation claims to have one.
